Thrilling finishes highlight opening day of state tournament

The Alabama high school state softball tournament is underway.

The Alabama high school state softball tournament is underway, with Classes 2A and 5A getting things started Monday.

The start of the tournament was delayed a couple hours due to overnight rain in the area, and things nearly went unaffected after that. But in the seventh inning of several of the final games of the day, a torrential downpour halted play temporarily.

All of the games were eventually completed, and as of Monday night, the start time of games Tuesday has not been altered.

On Monday, there were several thrilling moments, highlighted by Moody advancing to the Class 5A state championship game for the second straight year. After Springville took the lead in the top of the seventh inning, Moody’s Peyton Harry ripped a double to score two runs and give the Blue Devils the walk-off 6-5 victory.

Zion Chapel is onto the state championship game in 2A, making a statement.

Speaking of that torrential downpour, Julianne Davis was the hero for Pisgah, earning the walk-off hit for the Eagles to keep them alive and knock Sumiton Christian from the tournament.

Then you have teams like Belgreen, which are hanging around after a day of play. Cinderella stories always show up this time of year.
