More state tickets punched Wednesday at regionals
The state tournament field is filling up after the third day of high school softball regionals.
The high school softball regionals rolled along Wednesday, with several more teams grabbing a regional plaque to secure a berth at the state tournament next week.
A few observations:
Lyndi Perkins’ walk-off hit sends Austin to the Class 7A state tournament for the first time in 12 years.
Huge congrats are in order for West Limestone’s Lilly Bethune and Hewitt-Trussville’s Corey Goguts for unbelievable seasons at the plate. They will likely finish the year tied for the state lead with 31 (!!) home runs.
Wilson’s dream finish came up a run short Tuesday. The Warriors were the No. 5 seed in their area, before winning the tournament and making it all the way to the Q2 game in the Class 4A North Regional. Kudos to Taylor Brown and her team this spring.
Athens beat Hazel Green 11-10 in the 6A North Regional, which, if you know anything about these teams and their postseason history, is normal.
The 4A East Regional was incredibly tough. Congrats to Plainview and Alexandria for making it past powerhouse teams like West Limestone and Madison County.
Auburn’s Lily Brewer fired a no-hitter to defeat Enterprise and send the Tigers to the state tournament for the first time since 2019.
Brookwood has really come on strong the last few weeks of the season, and went 2-0 on the first day of the 6A Central Regional.
Note: Much of the South Regional was washed out due to rain. Thursday is going to be quite a busy day at the Gulf Shores Sportsplex, if the weather cooperates.
